Solutions for Crane Bay Transfers

A new white paper that describes the top 14 applications of air bearing (or “air caster”) technology has been published to airfloat.com. The white paper is based on Airfloat’s nearly 50 years of experience in heavy load movement. Below is an excerpt:

Crane Bay Transfer

Throughout manufacturing, overhead cranes are used to move heavy loads. These heavy loads become handling problems when it is necessary to move beyond the reach of the cranes. Examples: movement between parallel cranes and movement between cranes that intersect.

Typical air bearing solutions of this type include:

  • Handling steel plate and shapes between stock areas and parallel manufacturing areas – Stock is placed on Airfloat platforms by an overhead crane and then floated to the adjacent crane bay, where it is unloaded by a second crane.
  • Air caster equipment is also utilized in heavy construction equipment assembly lines that have a 90° turn. The overhead crane moves equipment along the line until it reaches the turn. The equipment is then placed on an Airfloat platform for movement to the perpendicular crane bay area.
