Customer Spotlight: Kalmar Industries
Kalmar Industries, a division of Finnish cargo-handling-equipment manufacturer Cargotec, is a maker of forklifts, yard cranes and other load-handling machines. If you’ve ever visited a major shipping port, you’ve probably seen Kalmar equipment moving, stacking and rearranging large shipping containers like a Tetris game on steroids.
The DCG90-180, one of the company’s midsize forklift trucks, is capable of handling loads between 9-18 tons. (Yes, that’s Kalmar’s midsize truck. The really big ones handle loads weighing up to 52 tons.) The DCG90-180 is equipped with a variable hydraulic pump that lowers the strain on the hydraulic system while conserving fuel.

The cabin features curved front and rear windows that provide exception visibility at all angles and profiled beams designed to minimize blind spots. The steering wheel can be adjusted to virtually any angle and can even be tilted sideways.
Kalmar builds its brawny forklifts from the ground up on custom Airfloat equipment at its Cibolo, Texas, factory. A pair of platforms, one under each axle, is used to transport each truck from workstation to workstation on a cushion of compressed air. With an added pneumatic Power Tugger, a single operator can move and position loads weighing up to 40,000 lbs. Safer and more maneuverable than competing technologies, Airfloat equipment allows Kalmar to maximize its manufacturing space while protecting its floors from excessive wear and tear.
