Moving Heavy Electrical Equipment on Air Bearings
A new white paper that describes the top 14 applications of air bearing (or “air caster”) technology has been published to airfloat.com. The white paper is based on Airfloat’s nearly 50 years of experience in the field. Below is an excerpt:
Heavy Electrical Equipment
Transformers weighing from 10,000 lbs. to over 400,000 lbs. present handling problems in both assembly and tests prior to shipment. Airfloat equipment has been applied with success to transformer movement by a number of manufacturers in the U.S., Canada,
Wire Carriers
The use of air bearing platforms for movement of coils of copper wire is the largest single application in Airfloat history. One company purchased over 2,600 platforms for use in cable manufacturing. A major advantage of air bearing equipment over conventional equipment is that it requires much less aisle space for movement of the coils of wire.
Electrical Control Modules
Airfloat air bearings have been applied to the bottom of large electronic control cabinets that weigh from 300 lbs. to 800 lbs. The air bearings allow easy cabinet movement when servicing is required.
