Air Skids Move Large CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine)

Air Skid Case Study

SUMMARY

An aerospace engine manufacturer needed to move their CMM across their building and into a new testing bay. Due to the size and weight of the machine, as well as the sensitive nature of the equipment, Airfloat Air Skids were chosen for the move.

Heavy Machine

The machine weighed 55,000 lbs. The customers fork trucks could not handle the weight, and their cranes were unable to cross between rooms. With Air Skids, a few people were able to safely walk the unit across the facility.

Sensitive Equipment

Coordinate Measuring Machines are expensive and sensitive to vibration. To avoid damaging the machine which may happen with casters, Air Skids were used which allows for nearly frictionless, smooth movement.

Easy Set Up

To get the Air Skids underneath the machine, our customer used jacks to lift the load a few inches, to slide our air skids under each corner. Air hoses were connected and it was moved by hand down the aisle to the test room.

“The system was easy to set up and we were able to move our machine in less than an hour. Very happy with the experience”
-Rich A.

THE PROBLEM

Moving a sensitive 55,000 lb. machine through the facility into a test bay where fork trucks, wheels, or cranes were unable to do so.

THE SOLUTION

Use a set of six 24” Air Skids to smoothly glide the machine and position it in its new location.

IMPLEMENTATION AND RESULTS

The setup and move were done in one morning, with a few operators. The customer was thrilled with the result and keeps a set of Air Skids at their facility for other moves.
